Skimming for best blu-ray player to entertain myself

The advanced benefits of Blu-ray are crystal clear: Video from traditional DVDs contains fewer than 350,000 pixels, while 1080p HD video packs more than two million, which translates to sublime, high-resolution detail. Blu-ray and HD-DVD both utilize Blue Laser and video compression technology to achieve high definition video playback on the same size disc as a standard DVD. If you want to make the most of your 1080p HDTV, you should upgrade to a Blu-ray player.
And there's never been a better time to do it. The technology has matured, and the current crop of Blu-ray players offer stellar HD picture quality, fast disc-handling, and robust Web features like integrated Wi-Fi and audio and video streaming. These days you can find a very solid, well-rounded player for less than $200 if you do some smart online shopping. Still, there are a lot of choices out there.

Currently, all of the major studios are releasing content in the Blu-ray Disc format, with smaller studios also joining in. A large number of films and other video content is available in the Blu-ray Disc and more are released every week. Currently, about 2,500 titles are available on Blu-ray. Prices for the titles are about $5-or-$10 more than current DVDs. Prices for movies, just as for players, are expected to go down over time as competition heats up and more disc quantities of each film are produced. The list of both current and catalogue titles is growning on a weekly basis. Here's what you need to consider when choosing the right Blu-ray (BD) player:
  • If your new Blu-Ray disc player doesn't come with an HDMI Audio/Video cable, you must purchase one separately.
  • If you have a large DVD collection, don't worry. Blu-Ray disc players will upscale your DVDs to the full 1080p resolution.
  • Not all Blu-Ray players are BD-Live compatible, though many offer an Ethernet port for firmware updates.
  • For best results, use an HDMI Audio/Video cable.
I got 2 ideas for Sure Cheaper Sony BDP-S550 Blu-ray Player
null
(1) (;))Purchased for multi-channel, maybe not the best option
So I'm sure everyone can look at how the picture quality stands up to other options, load times, ect. All seem just fine on this player (for a Blu-ray). I'll never be fooled into thinking that this player loads disks as fast as a normal DVD player, but that's a price we pay for the 1080p resolution.

I made a point to purchase this over the 350 because of the analog multichannel outputs. I have an older receiver without HDMI, so I wanted to make sure I could use this player for TrueHD and DTS-HD MA. It reads/plays the formats just fine, but I didn't realize I'd lose the bass management using an analog signal path.

The fact that this is a limitation not really to the player, but to my receiver is probably common sense to most people that have dabbled in home theatre. The problem was that information isn't really available in any of the technical literature for the product (either the 550 or my receiver). So, I wanted to at least give a heads up to anyone else.

Like I've said, it's a great player, but I just wish it had more robust bass management features (crossover is set too high for my preference, so I'm using full range on all my fronts now). Not terrible, but probably more strain on my drivers than I'd like at loud volumes.
(2) ()Over rated technology
If you are expecting high def imaging on Blu-ray disks equal to HDTV you won't get it with this unit. However, since movies will eventually only be available in this format, consumers will eventually be forced to go with it. As for now, the Sony BDP-S550 is not worth the money if you already have a high quality DVD player and are satisfied with the DVD movie offerings available to you.

(1)(:D)NICE!

Very nice features.
Only down side is the player does not come with a HDMI cable.
It would have been nice to include that for the price. Or at least mention it on the purchase site.
(2) ()Not Happy
I purchased this Sony BDP-S550 over a year ago because of the reviews and because Sony had won the Blu-ray contest with other formats. I'm a big fan of Sony products but I've had my share of problems. This player has played my Blu-ray DVDs very well but then again, I'd say I've only watched less than ten actual Blu-ray movies during the time that I've had this player. A week ago, I'm watching a Blu-ray movie and all of sudden near the end of the movie, it stops and freezes. I went through trying to start the movie again and decided that the disc must be bad so I took the disc back to the store and got the same title. This time, the movie won't load at all. I tried other Blu-ray discs that I had along with other standard DVD titles and nothing works. I then purchased a lens cleaner. The cleaner did ok but still, no discs will play. I contacted Sony for assistance. To fix it, I have to ship it to a Sony authorized dealer for $112.00. I don't know if I am going to ship it or get another Sony player. But I'm leaning towards getting another player like the Panasonic. I've seen other situations where just after the warranty runs out, the device goes bad. Mine is one month over a year old and now no player and no warranty. Lastly, I've read online that this is a common problem with this player. What the problem is remains elusive. Still a good player...when it works...and mine doesn't...and I'm not happy.

Great Buy for NetFlix Users

I purchased this for an older relative that has an out-of-date television and refuses to buy a new one. She has a blu ray player that is not internet/network supported, but has a WiFi network. She is always complaining there is nothing on to watch on TV so I decided to purchase the Roku HD Player. Installation was a breeze - it was up and running in no time. The remote control is simple to use since it only has a limited number of buttons. We activated the Roku in the NetFlix account and she was surfing for movies with a smile on her face. I connected it around 7pm and she was up till 2am watching movies. :-)

However, the player does have some flaws. She has Broadband through her telephone provider which is 6 mbps. For watching Netflix movies the down-streaming and quality of the picture is great, but there are some channels such as YouTube and Flixster that are not easy to navigate and have less than desirable picture quality. There also it no on/off switch, so the unit is always left on.

There are money channels that have fees but there are just as many free ones out there. Do some searching on the web and you will be able to find some channel codes that won't cost you anything.

Debbie Said to it,
A good, entry-level Blu-ray player
null
Make no mistake; this Blu-ray player is an entry-level player without the bells-and-whistles and faster loading times of more expensive models, but, within the price range, you can't get a better player. It works right out of the box, with only a few minutes of connection and set-up time. Although it cannot stream Netflix, it does have an ethernet port for BD Live and firmware updates. For the energy-conscious, it has two power settings: one for slower load times but less energy consumption, and one that uses more power to load more quickly. If you've never owned a Blu-ray player before, you're likely find both load times disconcerting; however, if you are upgrading one of the earlier Blu-Ray models, which could be excruciatingly slow, you'll find even the energy-efficient load-times to be acceptable.

Although Blu-ray discs are still more difficult to find and are more costly than regular DVDs, I recommend getting a Blu-ray player to allow the option of playing both, especially if you plan to hook this to a 1080p HD television set. Unless you've seen the difference on a 1080p set between traditional DVD and Blu-ray, you won't believe how much crisper a technology Blu-ray is; even the sound is better when played through a home theater system. On a lower-end 720p TV, Blu-ray still looks better, although obviously you won't get the same eye-popping detail.

The model is sleek-looking, thin, and low-profile, allowing it to slide into a relatively small space, although make sure you leave enough air circulation around it to prevent overheating. When ordering, don't forget that you need a separate HDMI cable. Try AmazonBasics High-Speed HDMI Cable (9.8 Feet/3.0 Meters) [Supports 3D + Audio Return Channel].

For the price point, this Blu-ray player cannot be beat.

(1)(88|)my tv is only 720p and with this player and a blu-ray movie the picture is great! if you have a 1080 tv- then the picture should even be better. but, whether its 720 or 1080 you will be happy with this player. and if you notice-the front is clean! (not a bunch of buttons n curves) and thats the way i like it! just clean n smooth.
ive used it with a 37inch lg lcd a 55 inch projection hatachi and a element 32 inch lcd.
nice picture with all of them (lg being the best) it also plays reg dvds and music cds.
and of course you can hook it to internet and enjoy blu-ray movie trivia etc-- plus it updates firmware if needed.
the only thing that would be a great idea, would be for it to have wifi!!!!!! I dont have the internet hooked to it now because I dont like wires running all over my house. so wifi would be great!
and for those who dont like the higher price tag of blu-ray movies---you can find good deals online! plus most blu-ray now come with digital copies also!! which i love! i put them on my ipod touch! and on my laptop! movies on the go----:)

and (2)()After a year and a half, my BD player stop working, a "No Disc" error mesaage is displayed for any disk inserted into the player. I did a firmware upgrade and tried a lot of options witouth any result. After browsing at Internet I found this is a common failure for this device.

Sale Sony BDP-N460 Blu-ray Disc Player-Black

So... I was in the market for a BluRay DVD player. Once I began shopping, I became wooed by the idea of having a DVD player that was also a portal to my media accounts on the Internet. Namely, YouTube, Pandora, Amazon, NetFlix and Flickr. Well. I feel like I got the best of me. I read on some sites that all of these services were supported by this player. I also had the impression that this DVD Player was Internet ready and had WiFi.

After I received it, the discovery began, good and bad. First It did not have WiFi. I reviewed all documentation and 'official' descriptions. Nope no WiFi but it could have WiFi if I also Purchased the Cisco-Linksys Dual-Band Wireless-N Gaming and Video Adapter. What a racket. My dog would have WiFi too If I strapped a solar powered wireless router to his back. Why this particular device was recommended I don't know. Perhaps Cisco & Sony are dating now. I figure I let myself be misled by suggestion and desire thus far, we may as well go all the way. I ordered it via Amazon Prime.

Once I connected the Cisco-Linksys Dual-Band Wireless-N Gaming and Video Adapter. I got excited again. It was easy to connect to my wireless router (Netgear supporting N). Set-up of the services was quirky. Sony has jumped into Internet appliances with apparent abandon. As with many companies keeping up with the Joneses, we, the customer, pay to Beta test. It works but it's not elegant. I jumped the hoops to connect Amazon, YouTube. Then discovered I couldn't just connect to any old media service I wish. As of this writing Pandora is NOW supported. I'm sure more will come, eventually.

Pardon me this should be a review not a rant. The DVD Player works great, the Interface is a little slow to respond it seems, the necessary connections are straight forward. And I'm an avid user of NetFlix, Amazon, & now Pandora. Heck I've even re-discovered YouTube. This is really great. Most of the online services I use are accessible via the Sony Bravia rigmarole.

One last item, there is a lot of JUNK stuffed in the Internet Menu, that I would love to get rid of, but who am I kidding, I just bought a 'cutting' edge appliance that has most likely been paid for by all of those services that are jockeying for my attention. How I wish Sony was doing better than it was. Like it used to.

Were I to do it again I'd have bought the necessary hardware and taken the time to set up a Boxee. Which btw is about to release an actual, well, box.

Compare cons and pros
Not perfect, but the only BR changer in town
null
I've started with Sony changers ever since their first 5-DVD spinner, to their 200 then finally their 300. I eventually dropped Sony and went with the Kenwood Sovereign Faroudja progressive scan DV-5900M 400+3 daisy-chainable integrated system (HR-1 Entre Entertainment Hub, VR-5900 receiver and two DV-5900M 400+3 changers as I peaked at about 700 DVD's). I truly loved having all 700 DVD's in one comprehensive library launching point that was able to download cover titles and information from the internet (OpenGlobe). And the library interface was much more robust and allowed more title information than any of Sony's offerings.

But with the march of time and technology, Blu-Ray was the future and my BR collection was reaching 200. Having to squint to read the side labels of all the BR cases when trying to pick out a movie to watch in the bookcase they were stored in became too tedious for my old eyes, I realized it was time to invest in a BR mega-changer and put my PS3 to rest (I already burnt out the BR player in it, but luckily it was still under warranty and repaired for free). And the only one out there right now was this Sony BDP-CX960.

Setup went smoothly loading my 200 BRs, though the slots don't have as much support as my Kenwoods, so the discs tend to have more wobble and play. So far, this hasn't caused any jamming issues, unlike my Kenwoods which are now beginning to jam with alarming frequency, requiring full disassembly to pull out all the DVDs and reinsert them.

After about an hour of having it load title information from Graceote, I was left with 7 unidentified BR's, of which I was able to manually reload 3 and select the best option from multiple hits. The remaining 4 I had to type everything that I was able to myself from scratch.

Benchmarking:
1) Cold power-up times average approximately a minute before I'm able to manipulate the interface. Compare this to 15 seconds for a PS3.
2) Loading the movie "2012" from halfway around the carousal and getting to a usable DVD interface was almost 2 minutes. The PS3 took 45 seconds, but keep in mind there was no spinning a carousal involved; just slipping in the disc and letting it take over from there, but you have to include the time it took you to find the disc on your shelf, retrieve and open the case, then sit back down. Don't forget the post-time required to unload and safely secure the disc back in your library shelf.
3) My Kenwood would usually take 30 seconds to a minute longer than the new Sony in similar tasks.

PROS:

1) FINALLY a beautiful 1080p playback CD/DVD/BR mega changer, 400 to boot!
2) On screen library that loads title information from the internet (Gracenote).
2) Overall, much more responsive and faster in every category than my older Kenwood Sovereign system.
3) Familiar and fairly intuitive media library interface based on the PS3 interface.

CONS:

1) NOT daisy-chainable. A big let down as it forces me to keep my Kenwood system to handle just the plain DVD's. And with my voracious appetite for BR DVDs, I'm bound to push past 400 soon enough and will dread the day of having to manually switch between multiple BR changers just to see all my titles.
2) If the title information is wrong on Gracenote and there are no alternative suggestions, you are limited to editing the title, genre, MPAA rating, director, actor and release date. You can NOT edit nor add your own custom thumbnail picture nor assign a category (roughly 10-15% don't have thumbnails from Gracenote).
3) You can't jump alphabetically within the library; you must always scroll. And scrolling through a couple hundred movies can be tedious. If you hold down the advance button, the titles stop displaying and you only see the thumbnail view blur by, thus forcing you to release the button to see where you currently are in the library. Though the library does scroll very fast so it's not that bad to scroll through 400 titles.
4) The onscreen keyboard is painfully slow to use, and its different than the virtual keyboard of the PS3.
5) No optional keyboard input available. Heck, even my Kenwood INCLUDED a WIRELESS keyboard (though, switching between upper and lower case on that thing was awful as there was no CAPSLOCK and the default was always uppercase).
6) Unlike the PS3, audio output via optical is only Dolby Digital and DTS. To truly get the best audio experience from this, now I have to invest in a multiple-HDMI receiver (as I have DirecTV, PS3 and Xbox 360 HDMI audio to handle). Even though HDMI Monitors/TVs may have multiple HDMI inputs, all of them pass STEREO ONLY out through either its HDMI or optical out.
7) I was expecting a big machine as my Kenwood DV-5900Ms were 21" deep, but this monster is also 1 inch taller than my 8.5 inch tall Kenwoods!
8) The jog-wheel feels very flimsy and flexes on the lightest touch.

FUTURE UPGRADES SUGGESTIONS:

1) I don't think daisy chaining will ever be possible as there are no inter-changer interface ports. Alas, that means a whole new design.
2) Allow jumping alphabetically within the Library.
3) When fast scrolling, display the title as well, even as its blurring by in super fast scroll, I can attempt to ascertain approximately where I am in the library.
4) When viewing the library there is too much wasted space to the left of the listing (which is reserved to show the Photo and Music library icons). If they can shift to the left while providing larger thumbnail pictures, this will make it easier to identify titles, especially ones with long titles.
5) Allow for adding custom thumbnails and editing the category field.

Sony seems to have been keeping this machine updated as I have been getting rather frequent monthly updates since I bought this at the beginning of the year, though I haven't noticed any notable interface changes. I can only hope they will be listening to customer feedback and incorporating new features instead of just bug fixes.

Works great!! Easy to set up

I recently just purchased this to replace my five disc Sony dvd player surround.I got this on sale at Walmart for $298. I brought it home and since the speakers are the same color code as my old speakers,I didn't have to do any rewiring. I just simply unplugged the speakers from the back of my dvd player, unplugged the Hdmi cable and unplugged it. I plugged the speakers back into this one and reconnected the Hdmi wire and plugged it in. That was it. I have all my speakers set up in the front of my room on my entertainment unit. This is a set up option. I had never seen a blu ray before,so I rented some from blockbuster to try this out. Avatar(which I own on dvd) was amazing on Blu!! Then we watched Wolfman and I wasn't as impressed. Being as I hadn't really done the setup on this,I decided to do so. Then I found out that the default settings on this unit is 480p!! I read the manual and calibrated my speakers, upgraded to 1080p,and did everything the manual said for best pic and sound. I reinserted Wolfman and it was very crisp and a huge improvement. It actually made me wonder that Avatar must be that damned good to awe me at 480p!!! Anyway, the sound on this is incredible!!! Blu rays really have awesome sound compared to dvd and this really uses all the speakers and you can hear what everyone is saying loud and clear!! On Blus I never have to go above 20 on the volume. Dvds I usually have to up to 22 unless they have DTS. It really upgrades the dvd picture quality too!!Music sounds incredible. I don't ever use the radio since I live out in the country and cannot recieve any signals and the Ipod dock is useless to me since I don't have an Ipod or Iphone. I sold my old player for $200, so I really ended up paying $100 for this. You can't beat that at all!!! Syncs perfectly with my Sony Bravia 46 inch LCD tv too!!!

It has little differences from the 8th: Best Buy Sony BDP-CX960 400
Good Unit But With a Few Drawbacks
null
The unit plays all DVDs very well with great picture and sound. The problems im my mind are with the firmware design and I have spent some time with Sony tech support on the phone on all of the following and they have no work arounds to suggest.

1: The first problem is if you have any of your DVDs that are not store bought movies. If you recorded any movies or sports events etc off your TV for example or take your own videos and burned them to a DVD the unit will recognize them as "DVD + or -" even if it is a dual layer. Gracenote will list it as an unknown DVD and it won't be classified as "DVD Video", you will see "DVD + or -." You can understand that Gracenote would not recognize these but this creates the problem that you have to manually key in the DVD information. Not a problem if you have a few but I have over 100. It gets worse. A beautiful feature of this set up is to group your DVD collection by genre, cast, year of release etc. However when you use options/edit to add the DVD information to a "DVD + or -" it only allows you to rename the title. It does not give you the option to edit any other catelogue information. So you put in the title and that is it. Now I have a group of 145 listed as "unknown genre" So much for grouping by genre. Contrast that to a "DVD Video" simply recognized incorrectly by Gracenote. It happens sometimes, although Gracenote is pretty accurate for the most part. As long the DVD is recognized as a "DVD Video" as opposed to a "DVD + or -", with same procedure you have the option to edit all the fields including title, genre, cast etc. I hope Sony addresses this in a firware update.

2: Beware about Gracenote lurking in the background if you haven't turned it off in the settings after cateloguing your DVDs. Whenever you play a DVD it loads and updates the information from Gracenote. Think about all the editing described in point one above. If you have taken time to manually enter the information and the DVD gets loaded all that information gets wiped out, replaced by what Gracenote had and you are back to square one. In my case an unknown DVD + or - with now no title again.

3: If you remove a DVD from the unit for any reason even if you put it back in the same slot, all the catelogue information is lost.

4: If you can now relate to a lot of manual editing like I have, think about how tedious it is having to use a remote without the functionalty of plugging in a keyboard like earlier pre Blu-ray models had.

5: This I find hugely annoying. If you open the door of the unit for any reason, upon closing it automatically loads a DVD you may have had selected previously but probably don't want now. You cannot stop it and have to wait for the very slow loading process. Some DVDs even prohibit using the stop button until you finally get to the main menu. This will take a full minute or two while you likely express a few expletives probably because you wanted to select the DVD you just loaded or at the very least didn't want the previous one loaded again. At least they should have a user setting in the set up menu to turn this "Autoload on Door Close" feature on or off. I am very used to the Sony CD changers and when you put in a new CD and close the door it does not load anything. It waits for you to select what you want. With this you need to really pay attention to what DVD it will automatically load for you. The rental slot feature works well but that is not the only time you open the doors to the unit.

I have looked for 3rd party software to possibly use so I can at least use a keyboard but cannot find anything. Panther Studios is no longer in busines and I don't know if their Movie software would work with these newer Blu-ray units anyway.

Overall this is an excellent unit but with some flaws in the firmware that are particularly hard on those of us with a number of DVD + or -'s in our collections. I really hope Sony does a firmware update to address these issues. If they do I will be back extolling the virtues of a great company who takes their customer feedback seriously and tries to do something about it.

Remote has solid feel and is best quality of the many dvd players I have owned. Video image is very clear and sound is awesome. Unit itself is solid and substantial. Only complaint is that best sound is only available through HDMI output which avoids using the decoding available in my sound processor which costs 10 times as much and could,in theory, do a better job. I wholeheartedly endorse this product supposedly absolute sound said it was the best player for less than $1000.00 it was also endorsed by consumer reports. Great Customer Service From LG......

Interesting .... the initial reviews written 5 or 6 months ago were ecstatic - everyone was thrilled with the product, as was I. The most recent reviews reflect the fact that the dvd player often stops working after a few months.

When my player conked out, I contacted LG and they fedexed me a shipping label and offered to fix the player free of charge and paid for shipping both ways. They turned the repair around in less than a week and it is working perfectly so far now that the defective part has been replaced. They seem to be aware of the fact that they have a problem with this model, probably the result of receiving numerous complaints.
I suggest that anyone who encounters this product failure contact LG directly.

Sylvania NB530SLX Blu-ray Disc Player (Black)

Great First Blu Ray Player

This blu ray dvd player is fantastic! We have watched Half-Blood Prince, Transformers 1 & 2, Star Trek, and Hellboy 2 on this player. You can absolutely tell the difference between watching these movies on a regular dvd as opposed to blu-ray. This player has full 1080p output, HDMI and VGA outputs, easy setup as well as a pip function. I would recommend this player to anyone as a great starter blu-ray player.

Everything I hoped for
I purchased this Bluray player in March, and have loved every minute of watching programs on it. I have an older HDTV (rear-projection LCD Sony), and this LG is hooked up via Component Cables, since my TV doesn't have HDMI inputs. The quality of Bluray discs is fantastic. We also watch a TON of Netflix on it, and when we get "HD quality" from the service, it is very good.
I gave the remote 4 out of 5 stars maybe because it took me a few uses to really figure it out. I'm not sure if that's because this is my first Bluray player or the design from LG.
The bottem line on this product is that it has exceded my expectations. If you've seen a Bluray demo at any store, you know how good these can be. Even with my component hook-up, the quality blows away DVD. And we use the Netflix streaming feature far more than I expected we would (I just looked it up, and we have watched 87 movies or TV episodes on this player since March 3rd).
I would highly recomend this product to those looking for a Bluray player.

Buying LG BD570 Network Blu-ray Disc Player

EXCELLENT
I love this blue ray play!! I plugged it in with an HDMI cable to my hi-def tv. Within 15 minutes i had it hooked up to the internet and streaming netflix. It is incredibly easy to use. Of course it plays blu-rays wonderfully--and while i will use that feature, i will use the netflix and pandora features a lot more. Setup was incredibly easy.
I had already been streaming netflix on my wii and loved it. However, i was going to be bed bound after surgery and wanted netflix on my other tv as i could get a lot of tv series streamed through it. I purchased this because streaming netflix wirelessly was my first priority. There are many blu-rays that do this. I choose this device do to ratings, price, ease of use as well as its over all reviews regarding blu-ray capabilities. I wanted a wireless device as i couldn't do a wired connection and didn't want the hassle or expense of adding a wireless dongle.
As many people have commented, this will play dvd's better than a dvd player. I have not had a problem with load times or playing blu-rays or dvds.
I would highly recommend this device.

Fair idea about Lowest Prices Sony BDP-S300 Blu-ray Disc Player.
Buying Sony BDP-S300 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player

Not as bad as reviewed here, but certainly not great either.

I've had this device for some time now. The loading issue is one of three issues that I've had with it. The second is that it doesn't have HD audio (DTS-HD,Dolby-HD, TrueHD). Third is, there WILL be occasional skipping and freezing. I've managed to limit the number of occurrences that this happens by making sure I clean all rental dvd's before placing them inside my player. This also helps to keep your player running better and lasting longer by not getting clogged with dust, dirt, and yes...people's left over chicken grease! There is a firmware update for those of you who can no longer load your players. I received mine through Sony. This may be helpful to some, but on a side note: I've learned through years of technology purchases to never buy a new technology because it won't do what you will want it to do until a new device comes out later. Technology is being pushed out to the public before it is ready to be sold. That is why we have mistakenly purchased this player that's not capable of doing what other newer devices can do. And to make matters worse most of the sales agents are not aware of the features and specifications of the products they are selling to you. When I went to Best Buy to purchase this product last year and asked them if it played TrueHD they didn't even know what I was talking about, and then came back after their little huddle and said yes. (Which was just a guess) Oh, how I miss the days of The Good Guys store (superior technological advisors). Anywho... the smart companies out there will throw out a bad to fair product, knowing it will be consumed by us anyway because it's "new technology", then make a better product and sell it to the same consumers for more money. And naturally, we buy it again. The same thing is done in the dvd industry. It's called "Special Edition", "Limited Edition", "Ultimate Edition", "Final Cut", "Director's Edition", "Deluxe Edition", "Collector's Edition." The practice by these companies folks is known as Double Dipping. The only way to stop it is to stop consuming their products. And do yourselves all a favor by doing your own research before making a buy. Good luck.

Old meets new

We bought this combo dvd/vhs blu-ray because we still have some old VHS tapes we didn't want to get rid of. It works great, is easy to use, and was a great price. We have a Panasonic TV also so the 2 pieces recognize each other which makes it even nicer.

Works beautifully!

I bought this player with some worries, since living abroad is very difficult to return or change any equipment that might not work as expected. Luckily the order came through right as indicated and the equipment works beautifully. I tried it so far with Dvd region 1, 4, 2 and 9, usb DIVX, jpeg photos, music cds, mp3 and sacd, zone A blu rays and it has played everithing without a glitch. My previous player was a Sony and I'm amazed at the diference in speed of reaction (the sony took forever to start playing). Having lived in a couple of countries and traveled frequently both to US and Europe my colllection required a fully open player, and this has been a great solution.

Great player

I had an earlier review of some problems with three blu-ray movies and errors regarding region free settings. This was an easy fix by some extra instructions in the box. So if you have problems make sure you read the instructions. I've erased that other review. This player has nice upscaling; great picture; In addition to my region A blu-rays, I played one region B blu-ray movie and several region 3 DVDs. I absolutely would recommend.

Buying Sylvania NB501SL9 1080p Blu-Ray Disc Player

Nice blu ray player

This Bluray player works well and has a very sharp HD picture. I was able to purchase it on sale about 6 months ago at a local electronics shack for about half of the regular MSRP. I have had no problems with watching bluray movies until yesterday when GI Joe would not play. I followed the instructions at the sylvania consumer electronics web site to upgrade the player's firmware by burning the software to a CD-R. Once installed on the player, the GI joe bluray played with no problems.

Nice Unit

This came free with the purchase of a Samsung 40" LCDTV. I really can't say about its features, as I basicly just play it, but the picture is beautiful. The upconversion of non HD DVDs gives a picture very close to a blu-ray DVD.

tested with comcast and verizon fios, happy so far

Very easy to setup with Comcast. With my Verizon Actiontec router it didn't initially work though - I had to disable WEP.
(not sure if I should blame the router or this box)
I've had it for a couple of months and it's been working great.
The lack of buttons on the device (when it's turned off) makes it somewhat kid-proof, which is a nice feature :)
